County workers to wait longer for pay arrears

Nairobi County government workers may have to wait longer for the devolved unit to clear their pay arrears.

This is after the county released its budget estimates showing only a small fraction of their salary arrears will be paid in the next fiscal year.

The 2014/15 budget estimates that were tabled in the Assembly on Monday show that although the county government owes workers Sh2.5 billion in salary arrears, it has allocated Sh676 million for the pay in its Sh29.8 billion financial plan.

County Finance executive Gregory Mwakanongo said the decision to leave out the payments was deliberate.

Stagger payments

“We discussed the issue with the workers and agreed to stagger the payments and complete paying next year,” he said.

Also in the list of losers are contractors who are claiming nearly Sh1 billion, but have been left out of next fiscal year’s spending plans.

Mr Mwakanongo said the county plans to pay the debts in the next financial year when it expects to have collected part of the Sh67 billion it is owed.

A large part of the contractors’ debt was inherited from the defunct City Council and has been at the centre of the county’s financial troubles.
