Cord MPs move to High Court to seek bail over hate speech charges

Five Cord leaders who were arraigned in a Magistrate court on Tuesday over hate speech charges have moved to the High Court seeking to be released on bail.

The five are Senator Johnson Muthama and MPs Junet Mohammed, Aisha Jumwa, Timothy Bosire, Florence Mutua

University of Nairobi student leader Paul Ongili, alias Babu Owino, is also part of the suit.

In their court papers, they claim that they were summoned and held at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters from 8am to 3pm on Tuesday without prior notice to appear before any police station.

They also argue that they have been held for 18 hours without food, water, drink or access to medication and their relatives or spouses.

They have sued the Inspector-General of Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Director of Public Prosecution

They have been detained at Pangani and Muthaiga police stations and fear they will continue to be held in violation of their rights.
