Consumers’ lobby sues Nakumatt over pricing

A consumers’ lobby has sued Nakumatt supermarket chain over discrepancies in its pricing.

The Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) wants a court to order an independent audit on the extent of shelf-till discrepancies in the pricing of goods at Nakumatt South C, Nakumatt Junction and Nakumatt Lifestyle, all in Nairobi.

Cofek said it opted for court action following an outcry from shoppers and complaints that the supermarket chain was fleecing consumers by charging them higher prices than those marked on the shelves.

INTIMIDATION

“Even after we wrote a complaint to the management, the managing director did not show any remorse and resorted to intimidating us with unrivalled impunity.

“His actions showed that he has no regard for consumers,” said lawyer Kakai Mugalo.

The lobby also wants Nakumatt ordered to stop offering sweets in place of coins as change.

Following the claims, Nakumatt Managing Director Atul Shah said the retailer was internally reviewing the price discrepancies and blamed it on delays in updating pricing stickers.
