Confident Pipeline depart for Club Championships
Kenya Pipeline left for Cairo to compete at this edition of the Women’s Africa Club Championships in style on Tuesday evening.
The league champions were first treated to a sumptuous buffet party hosted by the team sponsors at the Utalii Hotel along Thika Road.
The players were then paid in full their camping allowances in full, before the team departed for the North African country while donning matching African dresses, complete with shining brown suitcases.
“We needed to motivate the girls, our queens, they have been doing us proud and deserve this pampering. Above all, am certain they will perform to our expectations in Egypt,” the club’s team manager Kashujaa Onyonyi told Nairobi News.
EXPERIENCED PLAYERS
In the absence of their main rivals both on the local and continental scene – Kenya Prisons owing to financial constraints – Pipeline which finished fourth in the last two editions of this will carry the country’s hope of upstaging North African opposition led by defending champions Algeria’s GSM Petroliers and Egypt’s Al Ahly.
Despite these hurdles, the team’s setter and one of the most experienced players in the squad Janet Wanja remains optimistic the team has what it takes to reclaim the trophy last won by Prisons in 2013.
“We don’t fear the North Africans at all. Having got to the semi-finals in the past two editions, I see no reason why we cant go one better this time round,” Wanja, a former middle East based player told Nairobi News.
The other renowned players in the squad are Asha Makuto, Noel Murambi and Ruth Jepngetich.
