Coach Matano diagnosed with kidney ailment, requires assistance
Kenyan football fans have heeded a rallying call to assist renowned coach Robert Matano receive specialized treatment for kidney complications.
The former Ulinzi Stars coach has been unwell since steering the Kenyan Premier League outfit to win gold at the East African Military Games in Rwanda last August.
Nicknamed “the Lion” owing to his no-nonsense attitude and punishing training schedule, Matano has been receiving treatment at the Coptic Hospital in Nairobi.
Doctors recently recommended he undergoes weekly kidney dialysis, a procedure that requires a monthly budget of Sh43,200 minus medication.
It has also emerged that the former AFC Leopards, Sofapaka and Tusker coach hasn’t been provided with medical cover by his employer.
MEDICAL EXPENSES
Journalists, fans and fellow coaches have as a result taken it upon themselves to do something – anything for that matter – to help the ailing two-time Kenyan Premier League winner.
“The family is in the process of putting up a Paybill number where all well wishers will channel their contributors to aid in his medical expenses,” senior sports journalist Mike Okinyi confirmed on SuperSport’s Simba Super Soccer Show on Thursday.
In a related development, diehard football fan Francis Ngira aka Towtow has commenced a social media drive, via the KPL CHAT Facebook wall, to receive funds to facilitate this noble cause.
“We have to do this for the Lion, we have to help him. I am already impressed by the goodwill. Most important we wish him a quick recovery. I am looking forward to seeing him barking instruction from the dugout,”Ngira told Nairobi News.
