Cliff Ombeta ventures into politics, joins TangaTanga

City lawyer Cliff Ombeta is the latest high-profile legal mind to venture into politics ahead of the 2022 general elections.

He’s also announced he will be contesting for the Bonchari parliamentary seat in the forthcoming polls.

Ombeta also confirmed he intends to contest on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, which is a political outfit associated with Deputy President William Ruto.

“I’m a member of a registered member of UDA,” read a poster he shared on Twitter.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, the criminal law attorney also opened up on how he shelved his political ambitions in the May 18, 2021, by-election in the constituency in favour of Teresa Bitutu, widow of late Bonchari MP John Oroo Oyioka.

This was apparently owing to a boardroom deal brokered by the party’s hierarchy.

“Bitutu vied on the UDA ticket but did not succeed. The initial plan was to support her and move on, but we did not cross that river. We must chart our own ways forward,” he said.

“We are not wasting any time … we have started campaigning.”

The seat was recently claimed by former Energy and Petroleum boss Engineer Robert Pavel Oimeke of the Orange Democratic Movement party.

It fell vacant after the death of  Oroo of the Peoples Democratic Party, who succumbed at a Kisumu hospital after a long and unsuccessful battle with stroke.

His announcement comes barely two months after he was pictured in the company of DP Ruto.

Ombeta later made public that he had joined the hustler nation while urging other members to sign up as members of the party.

Ombeta is a high-profile lawyer who boasts the likes of the Akasha brothers, governor Okoth Obado, lawmaker Babu Owino, journalist Jacque Maribe, fellow lawyer Assa Nyakundi, and blogger Cyprian Nyakundi as his clients.

He is set to join a list of renowned lawyers including James Orengo, Otiende Amollo, and Kipchumba Murkomen who double up as seasoned politicians.
