Civil society to hold mass protest in Nairobi over corruption

Kenya’s civil society will on Thursday stage a mass protest in Nairobi’s CBD over what they have termed as rampant corruption in the country.

Led by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), they are urging the public to come out in numbers to a mass protest against corruption which has been entrenched in the Kenyan public sector.

The mass protest will begin from Uhuru Park Freedom corner at 9am.

According to the organisers of the protest, they will march through the CBD to express their frustrations on the wanton theft of state coffer by the Kenyan political leadership.

The organisers aim is to deliver a signed petition with specific actionable demands to President Uhuru Kenyatta asking him to either act on the demands so as to end corruption or resign.

CORRUPTION

The organisers did not specify what demands they will be presenting to the president on Thursday.

The petition comes a week after Kenyans on Twitter launched an online campaign that invites those interested to sign up for a marathon race to fight corruption.

Under the hashtag #BeyondZeroCorruption, KOT extended an invitation to First Lady Margaret Kenyatta to champion the course as she has done with the hugely successful Beyond Zero campaign.

The netizens also want President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose Jubilee government has been implicated in several corruption cases, to join in the race.

SCANDALS

All this comes as the country is trying to come in to terms after the Business Daily, reported a scandal in which the Ministry of Health lost over Sh5 billion.

According to a leaked audit report on the Ministry, which brought to light the scandal, several companies associated with President Kenyatta’s kins and confidants were mentioned.

On Sunday the Ambassador of the United States to Kenya, Robert Godec, asked the government of Kenya to establish strong mechanisms and procedures to firmly deal with perpetrators of corruption.

The ambassador was speaking after participating in the 21km race during this year’s Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon saying that he ran for his wife and to end corruption in Kenya.
