City residents caught off-guard by flash rains

Commuters in Nairobi were on Tuesday caught unawares by a sudden morning downpour.

Those  heading to work were drenched by the rain as they scampered  to walk under canopies.

The Meteorology department had last month warned that heavy rains will be experienced in several parts of the country.

The areas include Nairobi, most of central Kenya, southern Kajiado, south and central Narok and Nakuru.

Last month, dry conditions engulfed most parts of the country, particularly western Kenya, the Northeastern areas and coastal strip “due to a deep low pressure system that occurred in the South of Malagasy denying us moisture from the Indian Ocean”.

Maize farmers in Rift Valley have expressed fears of declined yield this season due to erratic rains.

The farmers said delayed rainfall that has interrupted planting had made some to shift to short-term drought resistant crops to minimise on losses.
