City MPs doing little work in House

Nairobi County MPs maintained a low profile in Parliament during their first year, rarely contributing to debates or articulating issues affecting their constituents, parliamentary records show.

Data obtained from the Hansard shows that at least nine of the seventeen MPs representing constituencies in Nairobi hardly uttered a word in the Chambers between April and December last year when the House adjourned for the Christmas holidays.

Best performers

The best performers, according to the data released by Mzalendo.Com, a website which monitors Parliamentary proceedings, were Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang, Dagoretti North’s Simba Arati and Kamukunji’s Yusuf Hassan, who made over 200 contributions to debates during the period.

The worst performers included Joash Olum (Langata), George Theuri (Embakasi West), John Omondi (Embakasi East), John Ndirangu (Embakasi Central) and Waihenya Ndirangu (Roysambu).

Other MPs who hardly spoke in Parliament included  George Wanjohi (Mathare), Dennis Waweru (Dagoretti South), John Njoroge (Kasarani), Mwangi Gakuya (Embakasi North) and Irshad Sumra (Embakasi South).
