City Market closed for two days


City Market was closed on Saturday following a directive by county government to clean it up.

The Director of Markets  J.A. Abwori issued a notice to the traders informing them the market will remain closed till Sunday.

He also directed that all traders operating within the corridors of the Market should  vacate by Monday 25th to reduce congestion.

On Thursday,Nairobi county governor tweeted  warning all  Markets dealing with food for human  consumption may face closure if they don’t adhere to public human health requirement.

Dr. Kidero warned that its the duty of the  traders to ensure the Market does not pose public health risk

“Regular cleaning must be done,” he tweeted.

During the visit Dr. Kidero met with the City Market traders market Mr. Meshack   Mbuthia and agreed that the  county government will  continue with maintenance works at the market.

In an interview with Nairobi News, Mr. Mbuthia said the  traders are ready to do anything that will  protect their business.

He said the traders pay all the payments that the county government requires  them to pay  for purpose of maintaining the market including medical fee and food hygiene services.

“It’s the duty of the county government to clean the market since we pay for the services “he said.

He  also said about two thirds of the traders operating at the market are not licensed by the county government and are among those that have brought congestion in the market.
