City Hall staff to go on strike

County government workers have threatened to down their tools at the end of December if City Hall does not reverse recent redeployments, which the staff term as demotions.

City Hall has been redeploying its staff to sub-counties as part of service decentralisation, but those affected have lodged complaints with their union claiming to have been placed in lower job cadres.

Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) secretary Benson Oriaro, about 4,000 workers have been affected.

“There’s this lady who was promoted to a clerical officer 4 in June with her letter of appointment indicating that her promotion had been backdated to March. But now she has been redeployed as a labourer,” he said.

In a terse letter to the county secretary, the union called for the implementation of a 2012 staff rationalisation report that had recommended 83 per cent of the low cadre workers be promoted.
