City Hall halts contracts, payments after Sonko freeze order

Nairobi County government has suspended the execution of contracts, leases, assignments and processing of payments until the next government is formed.

City Hall has also frozen all activities that require consent and authorization of the executive officers and will only process after approval by the County Secretary.

In a memo, all county chief officers and directors have been urged to avoid breach of the instruction until the conclusion of the change-overs for ease of accountability.

“Please ensure that all the officers in your respective sector are properly briefed to avoid breach of this instruction or create further queries,”read the memo signed by Leboo Ole Moritant for County Secretary.

This comes a day after the Governor-elect Mike Sonko wrote to Dr Evans Kidero not to withdraw any funds from the Nairobi County account with the Central Bank of Kenya.

The freeze order is meant to curb any fraudulent deals by officials of the outgoing administration.

Sonko also told Kidero not to remove any materials from City Hall or any other Nairobi County Office items.

Sonko will be sworn in as the Governor of Nairobi on Monday, August 21.
