City cops outlaw planned Nasa rally in Embakasi

Police in Nairobi have declared the planned opposition rally at Jacaranda grounds, in Embakasi illegal.

National Super Alliance (Nasa) leaders had announced to their supporters that they will hold the rally on Sunday 2pm to be hosted by the area’s MP Babu Owino.

Nairobi county police commander Japheth Koome has however said that the leadership of Nasa has not sought for permission or notified police to be given security ahead of the rally.

He said the planned rally will be an illegal gathering and any person injured can sue for damages.

Mr Koome has threatened to take action against Nasa leaders who will continue to hold the rally.

RAILA’S RETURN

He further added that police are not aware of plans to hold a political rally in the city on Tuesday during the return of Nasa leader Raila Odinga from his tour in United States.

Speaking at the police headquarters on Sunday, Mr Koome said they are ready to face security challenges that they project will happen this week .

“Last week was calm, we had tranquility the whole of last week. But very unfortunately this week starting today we have a lot of activities, we have some people without naming anybody who are away but they will be back this week, but we assure investors and residents of their security,” said Mr Koome.

He added that Nasa has also not notified the police of the demonstrations expected to resume next week.

“I have heard of some people who want to demonstrate on Tuesday. I will not allow let,  it’s their right but we will not accept someone to cause fear and economic sabotage, we will not accept,” said Mr Koome.
