Church official sues archbishop for being a ‘dictator’

A church official has taken the head of the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) to court, accusing him of mismanaging the church’s affairs.

James Maingi, a member of the AICPA Nairobi Archdiocese Committee, accuses archbishop Amos Mathenge Kabuthu of ignoring the church’s rules and procedures.

The official alleges that the bishop has opened a parallel bank account without following procedure where he is channeling church funds and squandering the same with a few officials.

Mr Maingi, in his court papers, claims the archbishop has been issuing threats of ignoring elected leaders and banging tables during meetings

The matter is before high court Judge Hatari Waweru

“The Bishop’s controversies and unreasonable stands bore out in the meetings and he started being militant and totally dictatorial to the extent of ordering that no official of the Nairobi archdiocese should hold or convene meetings save for himself,” Mr Maingi claims.

Further, that the bishop had without any consultations suspended the 27 member committee of the Nairobi archdiocese and totally paralyzed the administrative operations of the church.

Then he appointed some commissioners without consultation and formed a commission to run the affairs of the archdiocese which action is against AIPCA’s Constitution.

“The commissioners are acting with full mandate and authority of the bishop and have been disrupting normal church services and behaving like demigods on purported extraneous authority of the bishop,” Mr Maingi claims.

“The bishop is funding, promoting and protecting splinter groups and criminal gangs to disorganize church operations including damaging properties of the church to coerce members to follow his whims,”Mr Maingi.

The case will be mentioned on May 20, 2014.
