Christians mark Palm Sunday ahead of Easter holidays
Christians thronged churches countrywide and held street processions to mark Palm Sunday.
Large crowds led by their priests poured into streets in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and other major towns, singing and waving palm fronds.
The day is in commemoration of Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, a week before his death and resurrection.
The ceremony marked the sixth and last Sunday of the Christian Holy Month of Lent and the beginning of the Holy Week, which ends with Easter celebrations.
PASSION OF CHRIST
At St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kisumu, Father Moses Omolo started the procession by blessing the believers’ palm fronds.
There was tight security, with worshippers subjected to thorough body searches and screening.
In Nyeri, Archbishop Peter Kairo said: “We pray for all Kenyans this week as we celebrate the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ died for our sins, including corruption, killings or even bribery.”
Mombasa Catholic Archbishop Martin Kivuva praised government officials mentioned adversely in a corruption dossier for accepting to step aside as directed by President Kenyatta.
