Cholera outbreak: Another top city hotel facing closure
The Nairobi County public health department has moved to court seeking orders to close Panari on Mombasa Road following a cholera outbreak.
A petition filed at City Hall courts wants the court to compel the management to close the hotel after 22 people were admitted to hospital when developed cholera symptoms on July 20.
The Ministry of Health, after investigations, found that one case was confirmed after a hotel worker tested positive for cholera.
Those affected were 20 NIC Bank employees who had a workshop at the hotel on the said date. They were taken to various hospitals in the city for treatment.
COMPREHENSIVE INSPECTION
The hotel has received notice ordering it to close from both the national government and the county, but has declined until a comprehensive inspection is done.
In a letter to outgoing Governor Evans Kidero dated July 22 from the Ministry of Health, two people who had been admitted to Mater Hospital claimed to have eaten fish and salad from Panari Hotel.
On July 28, the county sent a closure notice to the hotel demanding that the management present its workers’ re-examination and valid medical certificates.
City Hall public health officer Jairus Musumba, in the notice, also asked the hotel to provide food hygiene licences for 2017. He also asked for a disinfection certificate for food preparation and serving bays.
The case was adjourned to August 28.
