Suzanna Owiyo recalls last conversation with Oliver Mtukudzi

Kenyan songstress Suzanna Owiyo had her last conversation with Zimbabwean legendary Oliver Mtukudzi a week before his death.

Owiyo, whose genre of music is similar to Mtukudzi’s, was close to the deceased singer who was known within and beyond the African continent.

On Thursday last week after the Dusit terror attack, Mtukudzi checked on Owiyo via WhatsApp asking if she was safe.

“Happy New Year to you my sister. Are you safe my sister? I pray for your safety,” Mtukudzi wrote.

Owiyo thanked Mtukudzi and assured him that she was safe after the attack that left 21 people dead.

LAST CONVERSATION

Unknown to her, that would be her last conversation with the jazz maestro who died late on Wednesday afternoon.

Owiyo took to Instagram to mourn the man whom he referred to as a brother.

“Tuku my dear brother, tell me it’s not true. Just the other day you checked on me… trying to find out if i was safe after #DusitHotel terror attack. I celebrate you. Africa has lost a true gem, an Icon, a Legend. Shine on my brother. It is well Oliver Mtukudzi #RIPTuku,” she wrote.

Owiyo also reposted a photo of her, Mtukudzi and South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
