The widely anticipated reality show Nairobi Diaries, which premiered on Monday on K24 managed to create an online buzz but was almost exclusively full of negative online reviews.

The show follows the day to day lives of seven Kenyan “divas”: Vera Sidika, Silvia Njoki, Pendo, Ella, Gertrude Murunga, Kiki Kasera and Marjolein Blokland.

Under the hash tag #NairobiDiaries, many rubbished the show, some labelling it predictable, ratchet, exaggerated while others opted to switch to other channels all together.

Radio presenter Ciru Muriuki tweeted; “It’s like watching a car crash… awful but you can’t look away,” while @thatchickLynda said, “I feel my brain cells dying… but I can’t look away.”

Another harsh comment was by @Fakii who opined; “This is how they try to lower your IQ so you don’t ask many questions about governance.”

The comments on You Tube were not any friendlier. Carol Linnet Ombati commented; “This Pendo has to learn good English. Expression through words is important for reality stars”, while Njeri Githu wondered; “I had so much faith in the entertainment industry in Kenya. Where did you even get these girls from?”

While such reviews tend to drive viewership, many feel like the backlash will be too much and the show might not last.
