SNAPPY 7: Serro – Polycarp insisted on producing ‘Rongai’

After singing cover songs, Afro-fusion singer Hulda Serro has finally come of age with her hit single Rongai which has received good reviews.

The 21 year old singer sat down with Nairobi News and to talk about the struggles she went through before recording her first song and what she expects of the future.

1. What inspired you to sing about Rongai and what does it mean? – Rongai is basically about a wrong guy from Rongai who lies. The song become more sensible after I wrote it and hearing other people’s experiences. I think everyone has gone through the experience of being lied to by the person they are dating.

2. Why did you stop singing cover songs? – I knew I wanted to be a musician but I dint know exactly what kind of genre I wanted. The reason I did covers was to experiment with different sounds before I could start writing my own songs and choosing the right direction and now it happened with my fist single Rongai.

3. Briefly tell us about yourself? – My full name is Hulda Adhiambo Serro and I am 21 years old. I grew up in Kariobangi South and attended Buru Buru One Primary School before joining Ngara Girl’s High School and now I’m a student at Kenyatta University pursuing a degree in music.

4. If you were not a singer, what would you be doing? – Nothing, I have no plan B, all I have is my music and it will not fail. If you have a plan B then you do not focus on your plan A, everything in my life involves music.

5. How was it drumming up for Wyre during Jamhuri festival? – I was there as a background vocal (BVG) and Wyre came for his rehearsals and on that day Wyre’s drummer couldn’t make it and I was told to hold for him.

After our rehearsals, I think Wyre was impressed and he insisted I also play for him during the main event. It was amazing and the reaction from the crowd was unbelievable.

6. Where do you see yourself in five years? – I want to have a MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) or be a MAMA nominee. I also want to perform live with Yemi Alade and I also want my name to be mentioned when they talk about live music in Africa.

7. How did you meet Polycarp? – I meet him in 2015 during the Jamhuri festival and he later insisted that he wanted to produce a song for me. Months later we now have Rongai. I would still love to work with him, but as you know he is very busy with his Sauti Sol tour.
