Nation FM’s Vocal Nation contestants ready for final act

The final 12 university students who are competing to become the next big talent on radio are hopeful of of success as Nation FM’s Vocal Nation competition nears conclusion.

The 12 are among those who made the final shortlist when Nation FM held over 30 campus events between October and November 2015 to find the biggest campus radio voices.

The finalists are currently on a rotation presenting the daily evening show dubbed Vocal Nation (from 8pm to 10pm, Monday to Friday).

Racheal Wambui, who produces the show, said there was a gap that was lacking in the radio format and that is why they introduced the show.

“We were looking for new faces who could present different views on issues that mostly affect university students,” said Wambui.

The participants have benefited from mentorship by experienced radio hosts Chris Okinda and Jimmi Gathu.

During the first season, fans were required to vote for their best presenters through the station’s Facebook page while in the second season a panel of judges, comprising lecturers, were incorporated to choose the remaining competitors.

OVERALL WINNERS

The overall winner from both seasons will be given a one-year contract at Nation FM while the two runners up will be offered an internship.

Katiti Kiteta, a student at USIU Africa, and Muchina Malomba of KIMC are two of the remaining contestants.

Katiti, who is studying journalism, says her love for radio started when she was young. She also has a YouTube channel called It’s Katiti and Mumbi where they talk about anything that is affecting them.

She says her family has been very supportive of her but adds that she will take many positives from her experience in the show even if she doesn’t win the competition.

“I will always be thankful for the opportunity that Nation Media has given her,” she said.

On the other hand, Malomba says that he wanted to be a TV presenter but most of his friends discouraged him and that is why he opted for radio.

He says that he has gained so much experience since he was chosen to be a host of the radio show and he loves how he connects with his audience.

No matter what happens, he says, he will always remember his days at Nation FM’s Vocal Nation.
