Koffi deported after cold night in police cell

Congolese musician Koffi Olomide was on Saturday morning deported after spending the night in police custody following his arrest on Friday in Nairobi.

The musician was arrested moments after appearing on national TV trying to clear his name over allegations of assault. He spent the night at the JKIA Airport police cell.

The musician was deported together with three of his band members aboard a Kenya Airways flight that left the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 11:35am.

The flight was scheduled to touch down in Kinshasa shortly after 1pm. JKIA Police Station DCIO Julius Mbati confirmed that the musician had been deported.

TREATED LIKE AN ANIMAL

The musician’s lawyer, Prof George Wajackoyah, claimed that his client was treated “like an animal” by Kenyan police.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth and Gender Affairs, Sicily Kariuki had earlier recommended the revocation of Koffi’s Kenyan visa.

The artiste arrived in the country on Friday morning for a grand concert at Bomas of Kenya but his arrival was hit by controversy after he was caught on camera assaulting one of his dancers at the JKIA.

The clip of the assault went viral on social media angering many Kenyans who demanded for his arrest and deportation.

The scheduled concert at Bomas of Kenya Main Hall courtesy of Nsanna Promotions has since been cancelled.
