Davido, Wizkid, D’banj songs banned in Nigeria

The Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has blacklisted a number of songs, including those by top acts from the West African country, for what it termed as ‘broadcast-unfriendly’ content.

Davido, Wizkid, Iyanya and D’banj are among the musicians who will have some of their songs struck off playlists in Nigeria as a result of NBC’s move.

Some of the reasons cited by NBC for the ban are obscenity, promotion of violence, drug trafficking, vulgar lyrics and indecent exposure.

According to reports in the Nigerian media, the banned songs will neither be aired on TV nor played on the radio.

LOCAL CONTENT

Nigeria is widely known to support its local talent, and often shields its home acts.

Last month the Kenya Musician Movement (KENAM) protested insufficient airplay by local media stations in preference to South and West African music.

Days after the protest, it was agreed that it will be mandatory for public and private broadcasters to dedicate 60 per cent of their music content to local artistes.

It remains to be seen whether Kenyan authorities will also follow suit by banning the songs blacklisted in Nigeria.
