City nightclub accused of being racist to Kenyan customers

A high-end nightclub in Westlands has been accused of using its security team to routinely deny entry to non-Caucasian clients.

The Alchemist Bar may now enter the list of infamous nightclubs in Nairobi that have been known to discriminate on African clients.

The latest claim was sparked by a Facebook post by one Wamathai, who narrated how they were on Saturday night barred from entering the Alchemist Bar at around 11pm by the security personnel.

“At around 11pm Saturday night six of my friends and myself made our way to the Alchemist lounge in Westlands. However while at the entrance the bouncers informed us that we could not get in without giving a solid reason as to why, what shocked us more was that while we were still standing at the entrance trying to make sense of the situation, other ravers who were white were allowed entrance without any question,” said Wamathai.

Another Facebook user Dexter Findley, a white man, also claimed to have witnessed black people being turned away at the entrance or being thrown out the club or the dance floor, ostensibly to give whites space.

The posts attracted vile reaction from Kenyans on social media.

When Nairobi News contacted  The Alchemist Bar on Tuesday, one of the managers said they are not aware of the incident but promised to investigate the claim.

She, however, admitted that the management routinely denies entry to individuals who do not meet their standards.

“We will investigate the matter when we resume work tomorrow since we usually close every Monday. But it is helpful to remember the Alchemist reserves the right of admission and we do not just allow any kind of person,” said the manager who identified herself as Joy.
