Champs Gor still keen on points

Newly crowned champions Gor Mahia remain on course to attaining their target of 65 points after seeing off Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 in a premier league match played at Moi Sports Center Kasarani on Sunday.

Edwin Lavatsa scored the solitary goal in the 39th minute from captain of the day Anthony Teddy Akumu’s long pass from the midfield.

The win saw Gor move to 59 points with two games remaining.

Gor are now six points shy from achieving their target as they face KCB and Ulinzi in their remaining matches.

Gor Mahia coach Bobby Williamson fielded a largely second string squad with regulars including team captain Jerim Onyango, Israel Emuge, Eric Ochieng, Joseph Njuguna, Kevin Omondi and Dan Sserunkuma all missing from the team sheet.

But the sizeable crowd that turned at the match venue, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, were not disappointed by the team’s performance.

Later in the second half Patrick Oboya, Paul Kiongera and Edwin Lavatsa had decent chances to double the lead but were not able to add to the tally.

With the result, Homeboyz’s relegation worries deepened and the Kakamega side alongside Karuturi Sports now seem to be condemned to the second tier league next season.
