Can you pay Sh10,000 to spend an evening with Lupita?
Oscar Award winner Lupita Nyong’o will be charging Sh10, 000 per person at a gala dinner she will be hosting at the Villa Rosa Kempinski hotel in Nairobi next week.
The gala dinner is part of the itinerary in her homecoming tour in Kenya. This is her first official visit since winning the Oscar Academy Award in 2014.
In an event poster shared on social media, the gala dinner, dubbed “An evening with Lupita” will be held on July 2 at Villa Rosa Kempinski.
The invite does not state whether the Sh10, 000 will cater for food and drinks, but one clear statement reads, “Limited tickets on sale.” A corporate table for 10 costing Sh100, 000 is available.
The dress code for the evening is formal cocktail attire.
The gala dinner is sponsored by several corporates among them Safaricom, Kenya Airways and Bavaria Auto. It is in aid of the protection of elephants.
The Sh10, 000 price tag for the gala dinner sparked heated online conversations and made ‘Lupita’ a top trend on Twitter in Nairobi.
In the thread, tweeps discussed what else they could do with the Sh10, 000.
@mainaminor tweeted, “10k to dine with lupita.hahahaha.let me watch 12years as a slave tena then i go chill with lions at masai mara for that 10k #lupita.”
@Tender254 tweeted, “Paying 10k 2 dine with Lupita at Kempinski 4 a charity course is wiser than drinking 10k in one night. If u cant afford it, shut up.”
Others sought to explain that the money is for charity.
@missciku tweeted, “I get confused sometimes by Kenyans. You are not paying 10k to meet @Lupita_Nyongo. You are donating 10k FOR the conservation of elephants.”
@Joe tweeted, “You pay 10K to have dinner with Lupita yet when your Mom calls asking for cash to fund her project, u send 500 ukimshow mwezi imekuwa mbaya.”
@nerdcula tweeted, “Why would anyone pay 10,000 to see Lupita when a quick Google search basically does the same thing?”
