By HILARY KIMUYU September 22nd, 2017 1 min read

Passengers seeking to travel on the SGR trains can now buy tickets through M-Pesa after Kenya Railways unveiled a new dialing code.

From Saturday Kenyans will be able to for their train tickets by dialing *639#.

According to Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina the code will enable passengers to book, pay and even cancel their tickets for the SGR train.

“All one needs to do is to dial the code and follow a series of prompts,” said Mr Maina.

Passengers can also immediately make payments through M-Pesa to secure their tickets.

FIVE BOOKINGS

One can make up to five bookings at a go and purchase tickets up to seven days in advance.

After booking one will receive a short message confirming theirr booking and it will contain a special reference number.

In June, Kenya Railways introduced about nine paybill accounts representing each terminal, but passengers had to go to the station to get a ticket after paying with M-Pesa.

In the event a passenger can’t travel after making a booking, they should notify the station attendants before the train departs and they will be refunded their fares.

A charge of 20 per cent of the ticket fee will be deducted as refund fee.

REFUNDS

Refunds will not be issued after the journey has commenced at intermediate or destination stations.

An economy class ticket costs Sh700 while a first class one goes for Sh3,000.

The trains have become popular with passengers due to low promotional prices and quicker travel, a situation that has left hundreds stranded at the stations.
