Bring down fence on Lang’ata school land, Kidero told
The Speaker of Nairobi County Assembly Alex ole Magelo has urged Governor Evans Kidero’s government to bring down the wall around prime land at the centre of a row between Lang’ata Primary School and a private developer.
City Hall officials gave a go ahead to Airport View Housing Company to set up the three-metre perimeter wall in December 12, which school officials claim was done hurriedly in the dead of the night with no regard for safety and on top of a sewer line that serves the school.
Mr Magelo has threatened to mobilise Members of the County Assembly, parents and teachers to fight for the school playground if nothing is done by City Hall chiefs.
The Speaker called on the governor to take action against officers involved in hiving off the school land.
“It is so unfortunate that some people do not care about our children and are daring enough to grab school land,” he said.
LAND GRABBED
Mr Magelo said that the Executive must also present a plan on how it intends to get the land back.
A report by a taskforce on Education headed by Mr Mark Matunga, which was released last year, showed 36 out of the city’s 205 schools had parts of their land grabbed.
The Education Executive Christopher Khaemba said that City Hall was awaiting the signing a memorandum of understanding with the ministry of Education to take over primary school infrastructure in order to pursue the culprits of land grabbing.
Mr Magelo thanked the National Land Commission for probing the case with a view of revoking the title.
He said assembly would institute its own investigations.
The County Assembly Committee on Education headed by Mr David Kitavi had indicated that investigations into the Langata primary case would begin this week.
