Kenya mourns Mzee Ojwang’s death


Kenya’s acting industry is in mourning following the demise of renowned comedian Benson Wanjau better known as Mzee Ojwang Hatari on Sunday night.

The popular thespian, who for more than three decades has been synonymous with the TV comedy series Vitimbi, passed on while receiving treatment for pneumonia at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.

Mzee Ojwang, who was 78 at the time of his death, has been ailing since the beginning of this year.

In early March, he was admitted at Lions Sight First Eye Hospital in Loresho, Nairobi where he underwent a successful eye surgery.

Following media stories on his plight, the government stepped in to settle his medical bills and he subsequently discharged from hospital.

Mzee Ojwang was the main character in the popular Vitimbi show, where he played the role of a no-nonsense entrepreneur.

In the cast, Mary Khavere aka Mama Kayai played the role of his wife.

Following news of his death messages of condolences have been pouring from his fellow actors and the Kenyan public.
