Bomas of Kenya shuts its doors for new role as poll tallying centre

Bomas of Kenya will close its doors on Saturday to take up its new role as the national election tallying centre for the August polls.

A statement posted on its official website said the iconic establishment will be closed for two months and reopen September 1.

“Bomas of Kenya has been selected as the National Tallying Center (NTC) for 8th August, 2017 general election. We will remain closed to the general public from Saturday 1st July, 2017 to Thursday 31st August, 2017 in preparation and conducting the general election,” read part of the statement.

Only those accredited by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will be allowed to access the venue.

RESUME OPERATIONS

“We will resume our operations on Friday 1st September, 2017.”

At the same time, IEBC has assured all journalists who want be accredited to cover the August 2017 polls to apply by the end of July.

According to a statement, IEBC said the accreditation was due to a delay in setting up the link because they were migrating to a new server platform for this purpose.

“By end of the first week of July, all journalists will receive, through email, a link where they will enter some basic information and upload a passport size photo.”

Only duly accredited agents will have access to the centre in a bid to enhance transparency.
