Boda boda riders vow to defy Sonko’s city centre ban
A section of boda boda riders in Nairobi have vowed to continue with their operations, defying a directive by Governor Mike Sonko’s administration barring them from operating in the city centre.
Through their association’s spokesperson, Ronald Njoroge, the riders who are demanding alternative parking space have vowed to stay put within the city, noting that they have not been flouting city traffic rules.
A gazette notice published last month in a local daily by acting County Secretary Leboo Morintat said the riders are no longer allowed access to the city centre except for the those offering courier services.
The notice, which took effect immediately, warned of hefty fines, arrest and long term jail terms for riders who will contravene the directive.
“Pursuant to the provision of the Traffic Act CAP 403 of 2014 of the Laws of the Republic of Kenya, the county government of Nairobi wishes to inform all motorcycle operators ferrying passengers to and from the CBD that such activities have been banned with immediate effect.”
