Boda boda operators to sue Kidero over city centre ban
Boda boda operators in Nairobi have vowed to move to court Tuesday to reverse a directive by the county government banning them from central business district.
The operators claimed they were not consulted before the directive was issued and that it was unfair.
Tens of boda boda operators took to the streets of Nairobi Monday to protest the ban.
“Tomorrow (Tuesday) morning we shall, through our lawyer, head to court to challenge this directive from the county government,” said Ken Onyango, chairman of the Nairobi Bodaboda Association.
On Monday, the county administration announced that only motorbikes ferrying goods would be allowed in the CBD effective immediately.
“Pursuant to the provisions of the Traffic Act CAP 403 of 2014 of the Laws of the Republic of Kenya, the Nairobi City County Government wishes to inform all motorcycle (boda boda) operators ferrying passengers to and from the Central Business District (CBD) that such activities have been banned with immediate effect,” read the statement.
“Any operator and passenger found contravening this law will be arrested for an offence punishable by hefty fines and long jail terms as provided for in the Traffic Act of 2014.”
