Bishop arrested for allegedly sodomizing hawker during ‘anointing’ session

Police in Tharaka-Nithi County are holding a man who works as a bishop at an evangelical church over sodomy accusations.

Chuka/Igambang’ombe OCPD Barasa Sayia told journalists on Tuesday that the 72-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after a 44-year-old man reported that the bishop drugged him before doing to him the bizarre act.

“We have already apprehended the suspect and commenced investigations into the case that happened on Sunday night,” said Mr Sayia.

He said doctors at Chogoria Mission Hospital, where the victim was taken for treatment and tests, confirmed that he was sodomised and his private parts injured.

The officer added that they had advised the hospital to take some samples on the victim’s private parts and those of the suspect for screening at a government laboratory.

“If our investigation results link the suspect to the crime, he will be charged in court,” he said.

Mr Sayia said the man had denied doing the heinous act.

DRUGGED

The victim said that on Sunday he went to the hotel, Ken Food and Lodgings, which is owned by the bishop and booked a room.

At around 10pm, the bishop called him from the room and gave him some money to buy drinks from a club outside the hotel.

He said on bringing him the drinks, which included a whisky and soda, the bishop welcomed him to his room so that they could drink together.

He added that when he became drunk, he told the bishop that he wanted to go to his room so that he could sleep but the bishop told him that he needed to pray for him so that his business could flourish.

He said he accepted the prayers and the bishop took some ‘anointing oil’ and started applying it on his legs, hands and face.

He said he only woke up the following day (Monday) at around 10am, naked and the ‘beast’ caressing him.

“I can’t tell what happened after he started applying the oil because I woke up tired and my private parts in pain,” said the victim.

He added that he went for a long call but could not relieve himself due to pain.

‘MAN OF GOD’

He then went back to the bishop and when he told him of the pains and demanded to know what had happened to him, he gave him Sh700 and directed him to take bath and then visit hospital for treatment.

“I declined taking bath before seeking medical check-up and walked out as he urged me to a bath first,” he said.

He said he could hardly walk due to the pains but because the hospital was just few metres he managed to get there.

The shocked residents told the Nation that they could not believe the ‘man of God’ could do such an act. There are however those who said there have been rumours that he was a sodomist.

John Mutugi, a resident, said the suspect who owns a number of buildings in the town, claims that he performs miracles and prefers praying for people inside his room.

“We have known this man as a servant of God though he usually demonstrate some funny behaviors,” he said.

Another resident, Lucy Karegi said many people who sleep at his lodgings could have fallen victims to the bishop because he was very convincing.

The locals have urged police to ensure that justice prevails.
