Beware: Fraudsters out to con public over Fidel’s funeral

Conmen are taking advantage of the demise of Fidel Odinga to fleece the public, Nairobi News understands.

The fraudsters are said to have registered a local line from where they are sending messages to unsuspecting members of the public to ask for donations towards the former Prime Minister’s son funeral arrangements.

The alarm on this activity was raised by popular blogger Robert Alai on Twitter on Wednesday evening.

“Fraudsters have registered a fake number 0710 ***015 under the name Fideli Odinga calling for contributions.FIDELI. @SafaricomLtd #RIPFidelOdinga” @RobertAlai wrote, while alerting the service provider under which the line might have been registered.

@SafaricomLtd later responded; “@RobertAlai It’s a fraudulent individual. We have forwarded to our Anti-Fraud team to investigate”.

This conversation brought forth mixed reactions from various users on social media, with @shujaMoja suggesting; “@SafaricomLtd it is prudent you block (the number) as you investigate, people are being conned as you investigate. @RobertAlai”

The trend of fraudsters conning the unsuspecting public on the premise of the deceased persons is on the increase.

The previous high profile case involved COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, who was approached by conmen to “contribute” towards the female expenses of Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto’s late daughter Emmy Ruto.
