Bedridden since 2013, journalist Dominic Odipo appeals for help to walk again
Veteran journalist Dominic Odipo needs your help if he is to stand up and walk again after being bedridden since 2013 when he suffered a stroke.
That is the plea from his family, friends and relatives, who have come together and launched a campaign to raise funds to enable him regain his health fully.
Today, with social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook, citizens of goodwill now have better and more efficient networks to channel help.
Odipo was a long-serving business writer and editor with the Standard Group Limited and also worked with the defunct Weekly Review and Kenya Times.
He made a major contribution in the country’s fight for democratic space using his pen but unfortunately today, he lies helpless on his sick bed.
But the might of his pen was severely compromised when he suffered a second stroke in 2019 just when his family, doctors and caregivers thought he had weathered the first storm.
This second stroke prompted the ongoing fundraiser to take Odipo back to hospital and to ensure his guaranteed care going forward.
As a lecturer, an editor and writer, Odipo has touched many lives and attracted many who were eager to drink from his fountain of knowledge as a scribe.
Veteran journalist Kwendo Opanga describes him as a versatile, well-read and informed teacher, journalist, political consultant, communications adviser, contributor to political discourse and a family man.
“Journalism is the calling this wandering had been preparing him for. Hence the pages of the Weekly Review, Kenya Times, Dunia, all now defunct, and the Standard would be his blackboard and Kenya his classroom. And that’s when he was not lecturing at Tangaza, a constituent college of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, and others. Not anymore. But doctors say Odipo’s health can be improved,” Opanga said.
