All-conquering K’Ogalo to be crowned champions on Sunday

The 2015 Kenyan Premier League season ends on Sunday with all teams in action from 3pm in different venues across the country.

The main focus will be at the Nyayo National Stadium where league champions Gor Mahia will finally get to hold the trophy they rightly deserve for finishing top of the standings.

While Gor Mahia are assured of going home with the title whatever the outcome of their clash with Muhoroni Youth is, it’s squeaky bum time in the relegation battle as Nairobi City Stars and Kenya Commercial Bank fight for survival.

KCB, who are 15th on the log, face an uphill task against Western Stima away in Kisumu while City Stars welcome Sony Sugar at the City Stadium. City Stars sit two points ahead of the bankers and need to see-off Salim Babu’s charges to be assured of safety.

“Losing to City Stars was our greatest undoing. If we had won that match, the boys would have coped better against Ulinzi Stars last weekend because they would have been under less pressure,” a resigned KCB coach Rishadi Shedu said.

NEW TROPHY

The match against Muhoroni carries no significance for K’Ogalo in terms of their position on the log, but victory for the former will enable them secure a third-place finish in the final league standings while Gor will be seeking to end the season without tasting defeat.

Meanwhile, elaborate plans have been made for the trophy handover ceremony. For winning the Kenyan Premier League title three times in a row, Gor will keep the trophy they won in 2013 and 2014 for good and lift a brand new diadem on Sunday.

The elegant trophy arrived in the country two weeks ago from Italy, and was unveiled in a colourful ceremony held at a Nairobi hotel on Friday.

The 12kg cup made of brass, stands 90cm tall and 60cm wide, with sources at KPL indicating that this glittering trophy cost around Sh1.5 million.
