Al-Shabaab hunter moved to County Hall

The man seconded to battle al-Shabaab militants in North Eastern barely a year ago is back in the city.

Mr Charlton Mureithi will now head the Security and Compliance unit at the County government.

This means he will be in charge of the County askaris, notoriously known for harassing city residents under the guise of enforcing the old City Council’s by-laws.

Mr Mureithi, who was serving as the North Eastern  police commander, left Vigilance House in January where he was the director of personnel services.

Mr Mureithi’s new posting came as he pursued gunmen believed to be al-Shabaab who had killed two police officers and injured three others in Mandera last week.

They had attacked a police post and were shooting indiscriminately.

Earlier, Mr Mureithi served as Provincial Police Officer in charge of Eastern province.

At County Hall, he is expected to work closely with city police chief Benson Kibue as part of the team that will craft a command structure of the conceived Metropolitan Police Unit.
