President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta accompanied by other first family members on Saturday made a surprise visit to A. S. Joy Town Secondary School for the physically handicapped.

The president said his government was commitment to reform the education sector in order to carter for the needs of students with disabilities.

“The Jubilee Government will look into ways of reforming the education sector to cater for the needs of students with disabilities. It is not fair for students who are physically challenged to undertake the same exams with those who don’t suffer from any disabilities,” President Kenyatta said.

During the Seeing is Believing Initiative Duke of Edinburg’s International Awards and the President’s Award held in Mount Kenya last week, the president promised some students from the school that he will visit them.

The school, which was started in 1980 with only 30 students, has expanded and presently has more than 250 students.

EASTER SURPRISE

“It is a good Easter surprise,” Leah Kamunye the School’s principal said while thanking the president and his family for the surprise visit.

The students told the president that physically disabled students are forced to do exams in the same format, specifically writing on paper, like other students even though they are limited by their physical state.

On his part the president said his government takes keen interest in the needs of the disabled, adding that the government had appointed a Principal Secretary in charge of special programmes to ensure they are fully catered for.

“There are many people outside doing wonderful jobs, in fact I have a disabled PS who is doing a fantastic job,” said the president.

“We will do everything possible to support this institution and also you as individuals to gain employment or self-employment.”
