Police foil Citi Hoppa hijackings

Police killed five suspected carjackers on Tuesday evening in separate incidents in the city.

The five suspects were gunned down by police in Dagoretti, Ngando and Ngong as they targeted evening commuters.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo said the five were killed after police waylaid two City Hoppa buses boarded by the carjackers.

“Passengers managed to alert the police through a phone call in the Dagoretti bound bus and screams in the others. Police on patrol managed to catch up with the thugs” Mr Kimaiyo said.

The incidents come barely a week after a passenger was killed by carjackers near Kitengela after he refused to give them his valuables.

Last month, Nairobi County Police Commandant Benson Kibue said police were strategizing on how to net carjackers in the city.

One of the plans includes having plain clothed police officers boarding or accompanying buses suspected to have the carjackers on board.

Mr Kibui said cases of armed carjackers posing as police officers and targeting private vehicles are on the rise.
