13 city students in court for allegedly burning dormitory

Thirteen students from Lang’ata High School have been arraigned in court on Tuesday for allegedly burning down a dormitory over the weekend.

They face charges of committing a felony and arson. They however did not plead to any charges.

State lawyer Catherine Mtai for the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) requested the court to order for the detention of the 13 minors at Lang’ata police station for 10 more days to allow police conclude their investigations.

She said police are pursuing other leads which may result to arrest of more students from the school.

and that if the 13 are freed investigations would be tampered with.

The court was also told that five of the suspects were on suspension and were to return to school on July 25.

Lawyers representing the minors opposed the request to have the 13 detained further .

Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari ruled that the students be detained at the Kamiti Juvenile remand for five days to allow police complete investigations.
