Three in court over Fig Tree hotel commotion
Three people have been charged in court over last Friday’s commotion at the Fig Tree hotel in Ngara, where a city businessman is said to have drawn a gun.
One of hotel’s shareholders, Mr George Kariuki, together with Peter Maina and Joseph Gaturi were jointly charged on Tuesday with creating a disturbance and malicious damage to property.
They were accused of preventing the hotel’s directors from conducting a forensic audit ordered by a court seeking to unearth the loss of more than Sh48 million.
On April 25 at the Fig Tree hotel, the prosecution said the accused blocked directors of the hotel from carrying out an audit and damaged a door frame, 12 padlocks, a door handle and a chain, the property of the hotel.
They denied committing the offence and applied to be released on bail. But the prosecution opposed the application saying the police were still investigating the case.
“The accused are jointly charged with others who have not been arrested and might prejudice the investigations if released on bond,” the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Jackline Kilonzo said.
But the accused said the prosecution did not provide compelling reasons to warrant the court deny them bail.
The magistrate ordered each to deposit a Sh100,000 bond with a similar surety until July 15 when the case will be heard.
