Gor Mahia players scramble for Rooney jersey ahead of friendly

Gor Mahia’s players, technical bench, administrators and even the kit man are already tussling over who will get to keep Wayne Rooney’s jersey after their friendly match against Everton on Thurday.

Gor will face the English Premier League club in a high profile clash organised by gaming firm SportPesa – which sponsors both teams – on Thursday evening.

The match kicks off at the refurbished 60,000 seater national stadium in Dar es Salaam at 5pm on Thursday.

Rooney ,who quit Manchester United after 13 successful years to rejoin Everton last weekend, is expected to feature for at least 45 minutes against the 15-time Kenyan champions.

SCRAMBLE FOR JERSEY

The potential of playing against Rooney has initiated a scramble for the England captain’s prized jersey, considered a befitting memorabilia in the wider world of football.

“Reports from the dressing room indicated everyone from the club chairman Ambrose Rachier, to the kit-man are scrambling to own the former England captain and EPL giants Manchester United FC record scorer’s clothing,” SportPesa’s official website reported.

Rooney will be up against a defence consisting captain Musa Mohammed, Harun Shakava and Rwandan import Karim Niziyigimana.

“He (Rooney) has had a massive career as captain of Manchester United and captain of England and for my players it is a fantastic honour to play against him. They should show him respect but not too much respect. I have asked my captain (Musa Mohammed) to man-mark him and if he causes him problems I will ask Musa to kick him.” Gor Mahia’s English coach Dylan Kerr explained.

Meanwhile, Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma and aspiring Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko have each sponsored hundreds of Gor Mahia fans to travel to Dar specifically to watch this game.
