Zimbabwe long-serving president Robert Mugabe has resigned with immediate effect.
The resignation was announced by the House Speaker Jacob Mudenda during a parliamentary hearing to impeach Mr Mugabe, who has been in power for 37 years.
The 93-year-old sent a letter to the House Speaker saying his decision to resign was voluntary.
“I Robert Gabriel Mugabe in terms of section 96 of the constitution of Zimbabwe hereby formally tender my resignation… with immediate effect,” the letter said.
Aljazeera showed images of Zimbabweans celebrating on the streets.
