Umoja residents up in arms over sex workers invasion

Residents of Umoja Estate are concerned at the invasion of sex workers in the residential area.

They said the sex workers have lately been parading in Umoja One area, in front of the PCEA Church , Catholic Church and The Deliverance Church as early as 10pm.

Speaking to Nairobi News on Wednesday, the chief executive of Kenya Alliance of Residential Association Henry Ochieng said the high numbers of sex workers have been notorious in Umoja.

Mr Ochieng said the association is yet to understand why the twilight girls are moving from the city centres to the estate. One possible explanation, though, could be that operating in the estate is less competitive compared to the CBD.

INCREASING INTEREST

“We have had complaints about commercial workers in the estate. The increasing interest in the residential areas can be attributed to different factors, but we can only speculate,” said Mr Ochieng.

He said sex workers find residential areas to be safer away from the harassment of law enforcement agencies. He also attributed the rising pattern to increased demand by people in residential areas.

Other factors include cheaper premises to do the business and increased opening of bars in residential areas.

“We have raised concerns with the county government; they said they will come up with a plan we are waiting because this is a thorny issue and should be addressed immediately,”said Mr Ochieng.

County Executive for Trade Ann Othoro however said that the invasion of commercial workers is not related to the number of bars operating in the residential areas.

“In my opinion there is no correlation between the two, however there is a county directive for the closure of all bars within the residential areas,”said Ms Othoro.
