Police boss roughs up K24 journalist, smashes his camera – PHOTOS, VIDEO

A K24 cameraman was on Tuesday roughed up by a senior police officer and his camera smashed while covering protests in Eldoret town.

The cameraman, Duncan Wanga, was on assignment to cover demonstrations by Eldoret residents who were protesting the summoning of two governors by The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi over utterances they made when they stormed Moi University.

Mr Wanga narrated to Nairobi News how Deputy OCS Pius Misikhu had grabbed his camera worth Sh60,000 and smashed it on the ground.

“He approached me and asked me why I was taking his picture as I covered the demonstrations and before I could tell him I was at work, he just grabbed my camera from the stand and smashed it on the ground,” he said.

After the police boss had broken the camera, his juniors descended on the journalist and tried to budnle him into a police van.  He resisted and they eventually let him go.

On Wednesday morning, Eldoret-based journalists marched to the police station to demand for an apology and for Mr Misikhu to compensate for the broken camera.

According to Mr Wanga, the Deputy OCS agreed to compensate for the camera and also apologised.

In July, another K24 cameraman was seriously injured and his recording equipment destroyed after he was attacked by ODM youths in Budalang’i.

The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) condemned the attack on Moses Masinde, who freelances for the station from Bungoma.
