At least 20 nursery school pupils of Mount Carmel Academy in Nyalenda, Kisumu have been rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital after they were teargassed and sprayed with water from the police canons.

Pauline Ogosa, a teacher, says the pupils, some below two years were in their resting hours (asleep) at the time of the incident.

“The children cried uncontrollably while others looked almost unconscious due to the effect of the gas and the water,” Ms Ogosa said.

She added that police had been battling youth outside the institution.

A Red Cross official said they have administered first aid on the children who are awaiting medication at the referral facility.

The incident comes barely two Weeks after pupils of St Peter’s Awich Kodingo ECD, also in Nyalenda were teargassed.
