Why NGO board wants bank accounts of Rosemary Odinga’s foundation frozen

The executive director of the NGOs Coordination Board has directed for the banks accounts of a foundation associated with Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s daughter, Rosemary, be frozen.

In a letter addressed to Central Bank governor Patrick Njoroge,  Fazul Mahamad said the NGO, Key Empowerment Foundation Kenya, failed to comply with terms and conditions of registration despite receiving Sh530million from the George Soros Foundation.

Mr Mahamad stated that the NGO “has opened and is operating several illegal unauthorized bank accounts.”

This, he added, contravened section 12 (4) of the NGOs Co-ordination Act No. 19 of 1990 and clause 10 of the terms and conditions attached to the certificate of registration.

REGIME CHANGE TACTICS

“The aid agency that has funded the foundation is associated with subterfuge political activities globally and nefarious regime change tactics,” wrote Mr Mahamad.

He added that the funding is aimed at “achieving a political agenda which does not fall under the legal definition of charitable objectives as is provided for under the Act.”

In his letter, Mr Mahamad stated that the board had interviewed the chairperson of the NGO, Jaqueline Achayo Moraa, who he said confirmed that the officials are just proxies of Ms Odinga who “runs all the affairs and financial transactions of the foundation.”

SUSPICIOUS OPERATIONS

“She (Ms Moraa) further disclosed that she is suspicious of the operations of the organization,” wrote Mr Mahamad.

Ms Odinga is listed as the trustee and patron of the NGO, while Ms Moraa is the chairperson and Meshack Odede the secretary.

Harold Omondi is listed as the treasurer while Sandra Adhiambo and Salome Owuonda are board members.

The NGO board has in the recent past frozen accounts of organisations linked to Nasa presidential running mate Kalonzo Musyoka and Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Evans Kidero.
