Nairobi woman claims ‘motherless’ infant after losing her baby

A woman in Nairobi is claiming to be the biological mother to a child whose biological mother, according to the police, fled after delivery.

The woman whose name police could not release at this point gave birth to a baby at a private hospital and according to hospital documents her baby died at birth.

According to Dagoretti OCPD, Rashid Hubale, two women gave birth at the same time at a private hospital but one of the babies died and the woman whose boy child survived fled the hospital.

“We are still recording statements and have placed the child under observation at the Kenyatta National Hospital to await DNA results. All parties will report to my office on Wednesday,” said Mr Hubale.

The police boss told Nairobi News that the name of the woman would be released after investigations are completed.

Police have started the DNA process to help in identifying the 12-days-old boy’s biological mother.

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, however, claims that there are other women claiming to have given birth to the child.

He said he was called on Tuesday early morning by Riruta residents to help on the matter.

FEIGNING PREGNANCY

The senator captured the incident on video and posted four clips on his official Facebook page.

In one of the videos he showed the new born being held by a hospital nurse while in another video the senator is seen urging residents to let the police conduct investigations on the matter.

The incident comes four days after a woman was arrested at Othaya District Hospital for feigning a pregnancy with an inflated balloon under her clothes.

Ms Purity Kiritu, 21, had already been admitted, pretending to be in labour when she was seized by police officers.

The woman, who lives in Nairobi’s Dandora Estate with her husband, a boda boda rider, had travelled to Kiriaini in Murang’a four days ago to stay with her mother-in-law, Ms Josephine Wairimu.

The couple is said to have had no children throughout their marriage and police suspect that the woman could have been plotting to steal a baby from the hospital or seeking a referral to Pumwani Hospital in Nairobi.
