Nairobi residents spend night in the cold to file tax returns – VIDEO

Thousands of tax payers in Nairobi braved a cold night on Wednesday to beat the deadline for filing tax returns.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has set June 30, 2016 as the the last day for Kenyans to file their their taxes returns.

And in typical Kenyan style, many tax payers waited until the last minute to comply with the requirement.

At Nairobi Railways Club, and other National Tax Support Centres, there were long queues of tax payers who were eager to beat the deadline and avoid penalties for non-compliance.

KRA recently made changes to the iTax System to encourage online filing of tax returns.

The iTax system has drastically reduced VAT and PAYE returns filing period to within an hour respectively, on a good day.

The system also gives instant feedback as an acknowledgement to transactions triggered by taxpayers.
