How one family lost three children, grandchild in road accident

A family in Nairobi on Thursday buried all their children and a grandchild who perished in a road accident along the Eastern by-pass.

Peter and Hannah Kibugi congregated with family and friends at the St Paul’s ACK Church in Langata to bid farewell to their three children and a granddaughter who died after a truck driven by a drunk driver hit their family car.

The children Josephine, 24, Grace, 10, Mike, 7 and grandchild Anne, 2 were all buried at the Langata cemetery on Thursday.

Mrs Kibugi, who was driving her children after attending a family event in Banana, said the driver of the truck was over speeding towards her side. The truck struck her vehicle inspite of her efforts to swerve.

IN POLICE CUSTODY

“On the left side there were vehicles and on the right side there was a vehicle but on the rear end there was some space so I did some quick calculation that I need to just go off and avoid the lorry because it was over speeding… and as I was avoiding him he hit me on the left side pushing the vehicle out of the road,” said Mrs Kibugi.

Mrs Kibugi broke her ribs and injured both hands in the accident and was admitted in hospital for days before finally coming to know of the death of her children through their church pastor.

The accident happened on May 5 as the Kibugis were on their way home after attending a family thanksgiving service.

Mr Kibugi, who was abroad when the accident happened, made an appeal to Kenyan motorists not to drink and drive.

The truck driver, who attempted to flee after the accident but was cornered by an angry mob, is currently in police custody.
