Mystery surrounds the fate of the two patients in the bungled surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital last week after a family in Kitale claimed their kin lost his life as a result of the incident.

Addressing a press conference Saturday, the family of 25-year-old Angelos Miano, a third year Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Nairobi, claimed he was the patient who required surgery to remove a blood clot in his head but the surgeons instead opened up another patient’s head.

Mr James Muthee said his son, Miano, died as a result of the missed operation.

Mr Muthee, a prison warder at Kitale GK Prison, said his son was rushed to KNH on February 19 after he was knocked down by a speeding motorcycle on Uhuru Highway, Nairobi.

“He was taken to the hospital in an ambulance at 1pm but was attended to at 5pm following intervention by his colleagues who had heard about the accident. His life could have been saved if the doctors attended to him on time,” said Mr Muthee.

The person that Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki named as acting CEO, Mr John Ong’ech, declined to comment on the claims by the Kitale family.

“I cannot comment because I am not acting, you can check with the board,” he said.

The hospital had earlier said the two patients were on the path to recovery, even as it launched investigations into the matter.

A somber mood engulfed the family’s homestead at the correctional facility when the Sunday Nation team visited them.

Mr Muthee recounted how he travelled to Nairobi from Kitale to check on the state of his son following the accident.

Miano is expected to be buried next Saturday at their Kapkoyi home, Moi’s Bridge, Trans Nzoia.
